Formerly the Montreal Expos from 1969-2004, the franchise moved to the nationís capital Washington DC in 2005 and became the Washington Nationals. They became the first Washington baseball team since the Washington Senators, who left over 33 years prior. In 2008, their home stadium of Nationals Park opened. Due to the close proximity between the Nats and the Baltimore Orioles, a friendly rivalry called the Beltway Series formed between the two teams.
The ďNatsĒ franchise has 2 Division titles, one in 1981 as the Expos and one in 2012 as the Nationals. Also, during every home game in the 4th inning, the Presidents Race takes place, which is a race between mascots dressed up as the four presidents on Mount Rushmore: George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, and Theodore Roosevelt. This is one of the many ways that this organization incorporates Washington DC politics into the teamís everyday operation.
